ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Dozens of vehicles parked outside an Attleboro towing company went up in flames Friday evening.
Firefighters rushed to Sterry Street Towing, which is on the state line, for reports of smoke billowing from the back parking lot.
Pawtucket Battalion Fire Chief David Cairrao said firefighters arrived to find several vehicles and two campers on fire.
Cairrao said the flames threatened at least four homes in a nearby neighborhood.
“The wind was pushing the fire into these homes,” he explained. “Those houses were in real danger when we first pulled up.”
Cairrao said firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the residences, though it did destroy four sheds and the fencing abutting the parking lot.
“Thankfully, we stopped it at the fence line and the sheds,” he said.
In total, Cairrao estimates upwards of 50 vehicles were destroyed.
No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation by both the Massachusetts and Rhode Island state fire marshals.
The National Weather Service placed the region under a Red Flag Warning Friday due to the dry and windy conditions.
