Rhode Island leaders are aiming to recertify over 350,000 residents for Medicaid without lengthening wait times as state agencies deal with staffing challenges and increased pressure. The state’s Department of Human Services has had to contend with call center wait times that are more than double the target of 30 minutes, and the call volume for the initial recertification period is forecast to reach 16,000-20,000 a month. While a few thousand people could find solace through HealthSource RI, the state’s health insurance exchange, early estimates suggest that a large number could lose Medicaid coverage – potentially closer to the federal estimate of 17%.
