The city of Pawtucket has hired Charles “Chachi” Carvalho as its first-ever chief equity officer. Carvalho, who previously worked as the cultural and community engagement coordinator at Shea High School, said he aims to work with city leaders to make Pawtucket more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. He expressed the importance of empowering children to be the best versions of themselves and inspiring them to be civically engaged. Carvalho hopes to make a difference in his community by bringing leaders and the community together. Carvalho’s parents were stowaways who arrived in the United States in 1972, and he believes that he owes it to his legacy, family, and ancestors to try and be an inspiration to others.
