An image of Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island is displayed. The City Council of Newport has approved a proposed ordinance that will affect both residents and visitors. Paid parking season will be extended from March 1 to Nov. 30 and active meter times will change from 9 a.m. to midnight. Presently, paid parking is enforced from May 1 to Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dynamic pricing will be established, with a maximum fee of $4 for metered parking. This pricing will vary based on traffic in the area. The new ordinance will impact areas like Washington Square, Thames Street, Memorial Boulevard, and Bellevue Avenue. Business owners believe that it may impact their sales by driving people away. The council’s next meeting is on April 12 at 6:30 p.m. to vote on adopting the proposal.
