A man named Manuel Moreira, aged 59, died in a fire that occurred in a rooming house at Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford. The fire broke out on Tuesday around 3 p.m., causing thick, black smoke to pour into the neighborhood, leading to at least five others being injured and one person missing. The crews are currently searching for the missing person, while also demolishing the building. While some people were rescued by firefighters, others leapt out of their windows while trying to escape. More than two dozen people have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross and Seven Hills Behavioral Health. The cause of the fire is still unknown, although the New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger aims to find clues once they locate the missing person and determine where the fire started.
