A man from New York has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus five years for the murder of a Pawtucket woman over three years ago. Jack Doherty, aged 27, was found guilty of several charges including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, discharge of a firearm resulting in death, and possession of a firearm without a license. Prosecutors proved that Doherty knocked on the door of 54-year-old Cheryl Smith’s home and shot her four times when she opened it. Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital. Doherty’s co-conspirator, Shaylyn Moran, pleaded guilty last year and was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the murder. The couple had made plans to attack Moran’s ex-boyfriend but ended up shooting his mother instead. The state had requested the maximum sentence of two life terms plus 20 years.
