An investigation is underway after several school districts in Rhode Island received fabricated threatening phone calls on Monday morning. The Rhode Island State Police have been made aware of active shooter calls made towards Charlestown, East Greenwich, Narragansett, North Kingstown, and Westerly, and believe they were all made by the same person based on the voice. Westerly Police Chief Paul Gingerella confirms that the call made to the high school was a hoax, which led to a brief lockdown. Similar hoax calls were received in the Chariho district, Barrington, and Portsmouth, but all lockdowns have since been lifted. Making such hoax calls can result in criminal charges in Rhode Island. A similar incident occurred in Massachusetts last month. The story is developing, and updates will be provided as 12 News gathers more information.
