East Side city councilman John Goncalves, a teacher at the Wheeler School in Providence, announced he is joining the race to replace David Cicilline in Congress, adding to a growing list of Democratic candidates in Rhode Island’s 1st District. Goncalves stated that he would be fighting for economic justice, education, climate justice, gun violence prevention, reproductive rights, and a more prosperous Rhode Island for working families. Following the decision of House Speaker Joe Shekarchi and former gubernatorial candidate Helena Foulkes not to run, Goncalves and six other Democrats, including Pawtucket state Sen. Sandra Cano and Providence’s Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, have filed to run. Goncalves holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Brown University and teaches elementary school at his alma mater.
