A rifle belonging to the Massachusetts State Police was stolen from a locked cruiser parked at an apartment complex in Malden. The theft occurred late on Wednesday or early on Thursday, and the lock on the front seat was broken to steal the patrol rifle and ammunition that were secured in a locked compartment inside the cruiser. Experts suggest that the sophisticated break-in indicates inside knowledge of how systems work. State police are hopeful that surveillance video from the garage will help track down a suspect. The cruiser has been towed away as part of the ongoing investigation. An image of the stolen rifle is provided.
