State Representative Nathan Biah has announced his bid for the 1st Congressional District seat, which will be left vacant by outgoing Congressman David Cicilline. Biah, a two-term lawmaker from Providence, filed his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and is the fourth high-profile Democrat to join the race. As a principal of Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Biah is motivated by the challenges faced by his students, such as food and housing insecurity, mental health issues, gun violence trauma, undocumented status, and lack of access to healthcare. Biah stressed his commitment to tackling these problems with bold solutions. No Republican candidate has declared their bid for the seat so far, but Aaron Guckian, the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor in 2022, is one of the potential candidates. The primary will take place in August or September, with a special election to be held two months later.
