Police in Johnston, Rhode Island are investigating after discovering a skimming device attached to an ATM inside a Cumberland Farms gas station. Skimmers are illegal devices designed to blend in with ATMs and point-of-sale terminals that keep record of cardholders’ PINs for scammers to access their accounts. To protect themselves, cardholders are advised to use the “SCAN” checklist: scan the area for hidden cameras, compare the card reader and keypad to the rest of the machine, assess for obvious signs of tampering, and nudge the card reader and keypad for signs of looseness. Anyone who recently used the affected ATM should contact their bank to ensure no unauthorized transactions have been made using their accounts, monitor their accounts for fraudulent activity, and change their PIN.
