Brown freshman Olivia Pichardo made history as the first woman to play in a Division I baseball game during the team’s 10-1 loss to Bryant on Friday. The left-handed utility player from Queens, New York, pinch-hit and grounded out to first base on the first pitch. Pichardo played outfielder and pitcher on the USA Baseball Women’s National Team last summer, winning three out of five games against Team Canada. She joined Brown as a walk-on in the fall and made the roster. Pichardo previously played club ball in New York and completed an internship in the New York Mets’ amateur scouting department. While a handful of women have played baseball at lower-division schools, Pichardo’s accomplishment marks a historic moment for women in Division I baseball.
