House Speaker Joe Shekarchi has announced that he will not be running for Congressman David Cicilline’s seat in the special election to replace him. This announcement resolves one of the biggest questions about the 1st Congressional District race. Shekarchi stated that his decision is a deeply personal one, after discussing with his family, close friends and House colleagues. He believes he can contribute more to Rhode Island by continuing in his role as speaker. Cicilline’s resignation has created Rhode Island’s second open US House seat in as many years. Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos has already announced her candidacy, leaving only former gubernatorial candidate Helena Foulkes as the only major Democrat still undeclared. The primary is expected to take place in August or September, with the special election two months later.
