Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) President Dr. Meghan Hughes has announced that she will resign on August 31. Hughes became CCRI’s first female president in 2016 and under her leadership, the college achieved its highest graduation rates in more than twenty years. Hughes also fiercely advocated for the creation of the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship, which provides free college tuition to qualifying high school students and has led to a significant increase in enrollment, particularly among low-income students and students of color. Governor Dan McKee praised Hughes as a “bold, visionary leader at CCRI” who has been instrumental in strengthening the state’s higher education ecosystem. The Rhode Island Council on Postsecondary Education will announce plans for an interim president by April 19.
