The Original Italian Bakery in Johnston, Rhode Island is once again buzzing with locals picking up zeppole ahead of St. Joseph’s Day. Owner Don Petrillo explains that the shape of the cream-filled pastry resembles the carpentry plane that Saint Joseph regularly used, making it symbolic. This year, the bakery reached a milestone selling its millionth zeppola and aims to sell 60,000 by Easter Sunday. The bakery offers six different flavors, but traditional yellow cream remains the best-seller. Petrillo encourages customers to order ahead of time online or by phone. The Original Italian Bakery is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays.
