A coastal storm is expected to affect Southern New England on Tuesday, with widespread heavy rain changing to snow by mid-day. Accumulations are expected mainly north and west of Providence, with travel becoming difficult by evening. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for northwestern Rhode Island, and a Winter Weather Advisory for the rest of the area. Strong winds up to 50-65 mph are possible on the eastern Massachusetts coast. The Rhode Island DMV has canceled all road tests at the Cranston branch for Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The heavy, wet snow may cling to trees and power lines, which, combined with gusty winds, could cause power outages. Crews from Rhode Island Energy and local DPWs have made preparations for the storm.
