The police in Cranston are warning owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles about an increase in thefts and attempted thefts, particularly in the Edgewood neighborhood. According to police, these vehicles are being targeted by thieves because models manufactured from 2011 to 2021 lack an anti-theft device called an immobilizer. Thieves can bypass the ignition system and hot-wire the vehicle without an immobilizer. Police advised residents to be vigilant, especially those who own a Kia or Hyundai, and to report any suspicious behavior or provide video evidence to Cranston detectives by calling (401) 942-2211.
