
A man was restrained by passengers on a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston after he tried to open an emergency door and attack a flight attendant with a broken metal spoon. Simik Ghookasian, a passenger on the flight, said five or six passengers, including himself, tackled the man and removed the spoon from his grasp. Ghookasian asked a flight attendant for zip ties and the man was restrained until the plane landed. The suspect, Francisco Severo Torres, was arrested and charged with interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. Torres admitted to breaking the spoon and wanting to open the door to jump out of the plane. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Torres has previously sued mental health facilities where he was a patient. No one was injured in the incident.
