Alex Murdaugh has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and son, following his guilty verdict on Thursday. The murders occurred in June 2021 at the family property in Colleton County, South Carolina. Murdaugh was indicted on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in July 2022, almost a year after the killings. Despite the charges, Murdaugh has maintained his innocence and hopes to clear his name, while urging the Attorney General to find the “actual killer or killers”. Following the verdict, State Prosecutor Creighton Waters said the decision showed justice would be served in South Carolina, while defense attorney Jim Griffin stated that his team would appeal the case to federal courts and the US Supreme Court.
